Concurrent registration

Learn about enrolling in two UCalgary graduate credentials simultaneously.

Have you ever wanted to supplement your current graduate program with a second credential? With concurrent program enrollment you may be able to do just that!

Concurrent program enrollment allows you to enroll in two UCalgary credentials (certificate, diploma and/or degree) at the same time.

  • Any graduate degree (masters or doctorate) has the potential to be combined with any graduate certificate or diploma.
  • A graduate degree can only be combined with another graduate degree if the degrees are a designated combined graduate degree program, or if one degree is the final step of a laddered pathway master’s degree.

To determine eligibility, please consider the following:

  • Are you enrolled or admitted in a regular degree program? (qualifying, visiting, exchange, and joint degree students, as well as those who hold conditional admission for language upgrading, are not eligible)

  • Are you in good academic standing in your current program?

  • If you are admitted or enrolled in a thesis-based program, will you have completed at least one term in program before starting a concurrent program?

  • Do you have permission from your supervisor (if applicable) and graduate program to apply to a concurrent program?

  1. Confirm that you are eligible for to apply for concurrent program enrolment. Make sure to get permission from your supervisor and/or graduate program in writing.
  2. Contact the graduate program office of the program for which you would like to apply and ask if they are accepting applications for concurrent program enrollment. Attach your permission from your current program to your request. It is at the discretion of each program to determine if they will accept concurrent student applications.
  3. If you are approved to apply, you will receive an email with a personalized link to the concurrent program application.
  4. Complete and submit your application.
  5. Upload the required supporting documents through your Student Centre.
  6. Your application with be reviewed alongside regular applications for admission. Please note that permission to apply for a second program does not guarantee admission to that program.

Tuition and Fees

You will be assessed one set of general fees for both programs. If you are assessed any annual general fees, these will be assessed on the anniversary of the start date of your first program.

Tuition fees are assessed separately for concurrent programs. If you are concurrently enrolled in a thesis-based program and a course-based program, you may inadvertently be assessed per-course tuition for courses that are part of your thesis-based program. If this happens, contact graduate@ucalgary.ca

Leave of Absence

If you are enrolled in concurrent programs, you are eligible to take a leave of absence under standard academic regulations. Please be aware that a leave of absence must be from both programs. You cannot take a leave of absence from one program in order to focus on the other program. In order to finalize your leave of absence, you will need to submit two applications forms, one signed by each program.

Graduation

You can apply for graduation from one credential as soon as it is completed. You do not need to wait until you have completed the requirements for both programs.
